Traders come from all walks of life, some are highly educated, some never finished high school. I have seen both blow out their accounts. People are drawn to trading for the lure of quick money. They believe they can spend a weekend taking course, or watch a few DVD’s and beat the professional traders at their game. They don’t realize that those professionals have put in a lot of time and money to learn their craft, to become successful traders. Unrealistic goals come in all shapes and sizes. From wanting to quit their job in a week and start trading full time, to making $1000 a day trading a one lot. While that is possible, it’s highly unlikely that anyone starting out will be making 20 points a day trading one contract.

Not everyone is suited to trading. Many are called but few are chosen. It’s the traders with realistic goals both financially and time wise that make it in this industry. This is a tough business and traders need to be prepared to put in the time and effort to truly learn what successful trading is. Trading, the actual analysis, is quite simple. But it’s not easy. It’s not easy because trading will require you to self govern, to be accountable for your actions, and take responsibility for your trading results. Most are not willing to do this. They look everywhere but in the mirror, but that is where the problem lies.

Having realistic goals, setting aside the proper time to learn to trade, then putting in the time at the screen all play an important role in trading success. I tell traders, “Start small and go slow” as this is a marathon, not a sprint.
